Renewable energy, smart energy management, new associated uses and the carbon cycle all have a crucial role to play in addressing the challenges of climate change and access to energy for a growing population. We must anticipate the rupture technology that will shape a future with carbon-neutral energy around the globe (Net Zero) and accelerate the transformation of our energy business lines.

MEETING THE CHALLENGES OF CLIMATE CHANGE AND ACCESS TO ENERGY

Our society needs to move toward carbon neutrality. AIE’s “SDS” scenarios and TotalEnergies’s “rupture” scenarios (see Energy Outlook), which are aligned with the Paris Agreement goal, show that the demand for oil will be stabilizing and then declining. At the same time, the electricity and renewable energy markets are experiencing a lot of growth. These scenarios highlight the drastic changes that are necessary. These changes will be brought about in particular via technological and behavioral transformations that will give rise to new industrial sectors.

Our objective is to take advantage of the scientific ecosystem gathered on the Paris-Saclay plateau to accelerate our R&D in new energies. In France, we dream of an American-style campus where universities, laboratories, start-ups and large companies interact. We plan to install 200 to 300 researchers from TotalEnergies in the ecosystem in Saclay. They are also already a hundred present on site.

THE ZERO-CARBON CHALLENGE

TotalEnergies has set itself the ambition to get to net-zero emissions by 2050 together with society. Electricity and renewable energy are a strategic area of growth for the Group. Every year, it invests over $2 billion into it (TotalEnergies France, Total Renouvelables, Saft, EV Charge, Vents d’Oc, JV with Adani, Fonroche etc.) with a view to achieving an installed capacity of 100 GW by 2030.

This shift to carbon-free energy can also be seen in our innovation and research activities. Our R&D focuses its efforts on developing resources that support the Group’s goals and as such is spearheading TotalEnergies’s commitment to becoming carbon-neutral. Projects dedicated to making the energy mix carbon-free account for over 40% of the Group’s research efforts: Renewable energy, electric systems for transportation and industrial sites, biofuels, hydrogen, carbon capture... the Group is investing in strategic areas that will contribute to carbon neutrality at research centers in various parts of the world.
